Manchester United and Barcelona get one step closer to title while Arsenal and Real Madrid drop points

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE

WEST HAM UNITED 2 - 4 MANCHESTER UTD

Sir Alex Ferguson declared Manchester United had "played like champions" after watching them add another entry to their pantheon of great comebacks by beating West Ham to edge closer to the Barclays Premier League title.
For the umpteenth time during Ferguson's legendary reign, United looked dead and buried with time running out of a game they could ill afford to lose.
But in a sensational 19 minutes that included a 14-minute Wayne Rooney hat-trick, the leaders turned a 2-0 defeat into a 4-2 victory, propelling them seven points clear at the top as Arsenal could only draw with Blackburn.

ARSENAL 0 - 0 BLACKBURN ROVERS
Arsenal were left frustrated as their Premier League title hopes suffered a blow after Blackburn grabbed a goalless draw at The Emirates. The Gunners - who now trail leaders Manchester United by seven points with a match in hand - had plenty of possession, but were unable to really test Paul Robinson.
Rovers - who had lost five of the last eight matches - grew in confidence and survived the sending-off of midfielder Steven Nzonzi to earn a useful point in their battle against relegation.
With United having coming from behind to win at West Ham earlier this afternoon, Arsenal could not afford another off day following two successive draws before the international break - but that is exactly what transpired.

LA LIGA

REAL MADRID 0 - 1 SPORTING GIJON

The Portuguese coach suffered his first home defeat in 150 matches when his side were shocked 1-0 by Sporting Gijon in the La Liga on Saturday, a defeat which effectively killed off their title hopes as they trail leaders Barcelona by eight points. And it appeared their title hopes have been extinguished when Pep Guardiola's side notched a 1-0 win away to Villarreal. Jose Mourinho said "Football is football, we had many chances to score. Sporting defended, defended and defended, and then scored a goal. That's football for you."

VILLARREAL 0 - 1 BARCELONA

The Catalan giants went a massive eight points clear at the top of the standings following a 1-0 win away to Villarreal while title challengers Real Madrid shockingly went down 1-0 at home to Sporting Gijon.
Gerard Pique scored the only goal of the match and helped his side earn a victory against Villarreal.
